The Western football team has finally toppled Laval in the rankings.

The Mustangs’ 4-0 start, coupled with the Rouge et Or’s 23-18 loss to Montreal Carabins this past weekend, has propelled Greg Marshall’s squad to the No. 1 spot in the U Sports pigskin rankings for the first time this season. Pre-season favourite Laval dropped to third and the Carabins are second.

The Stangs will put their perfect record at the mid-way mark of the regular schedule on the line in Guelph against the sixth-ranked Gryphons Saturday. Western has won 24 straight games against Ontario opponents and 26 consecutive regular-season games dating back to Sept. 4, 2016 against Carleton.

Conference foes McMaster (No. 7), Ottawa (9) and Toronto (10) also made the top 10 poll. The Varsity Blues, off to a 2-1 start, haven’t been this highly regarded in nearly 22 years.
