Near North District School Board trustee Greg Barnes has handed in his resignation.

The trustee and retired high school teacher with 28 years’ experience will officially be off the board as of Friday.

Barnes was elected to the board in October 2018 as the representative for Zone 2, which includes Callander, Bonfield, Jocko Point, Chisholm and Papineau-Cameron.

Barnes was the only trustee to vote against the closure of Widdifield last fall when trustees took a re-vote. As well, he voted down the continuation of the International Baccalaureate Program offered at Chippewa Secondary School.

Board chairman Jay Aspin confirmed the news Monday.

“Yes, Greg Barnes has resigned effective Jan. 31,” he said.

When asked about the process of filling his seat on the board, Aspin said, “Administration is researching the options for us and will outline the options available, which we will discuss at our next committee of the whole meeting on Feb. 11.”

“Administration will be providing the board with the full range of options at that meeting as trustees will collectively make the decision,” Aspin said.

“Since the last election on Oct. 22, the makeup of the board, that is the number of trustees per zone, has changed as one trustee has moved from Zone 1 to Zone 2, which appears to be permitted under the legislation but has added an additional consideration regarding the board decision of the replacement for trustee Barnes.”
