Fishermen conquer Titans

A sign of a good team is how they respond after a loss – especially a bad one.
The Selkirk Fishermen (8-2) showed why they sit tied atop the KJHL standings after doubling the Sanford Titans 8-4 on Sunday afternoon.
"We played a little better, but we were still a little sloppy," said Fishermen head coach Al Hares, always the perfectionist. "We had a lot of opportunities but we're still missing some goals. Still, our forecheck was better and I thought our goaltending was much improved."
The Fish dominated right from the outset, controlling the play and outshooting the home side 50-18, including 18-6 in the first period.
Shayne Fredborg scored just 58 seconds into the game and then added a power-play goal midway through the period. Fredborg would later leave the game with an injury.
The Fish then went up 5-1 after the second on goals from Brett Overwater, Ryan Mueller and Riley MacVicar.
In the third, Selkirk continued to get balanced scoring as Chris Carver, Logan Greenfield and Kyle Cyr tallied. Jeff Hofer, Ryan Palas, Kelly Randall and Brad Stouffer replied for Sanford, now 1-9, but a team much improved from a year ago.
The Sanford victory was a better game for Selkirk compared to an 8-4 home loss to the Peguis Juniors on Nov. 10.
Hares was extremely disappointed in the Peguis loss, citing problems with goaltending and defensive play.
He also questioned the club's leadership from some of its veteran players and their lack of commitment to play in the defensive end.
"We put in some new stuff so I'll take the blame," Hares said.
"We looked lost and disoriented, and along with that, we had a lack of passion for the game. It was totally out of character and the type of tactics we were using were not working."
Peguis took advantage of Selkirk's sloppy play, grabbing a 3-0 first-period lead and then led 5-3 after 40 minutes.
Kelly Prince and Clifton Campbell led Peguis with two goals apiece while Ralph Cochrane, Dwight Sutherland, Grant Sutherland and Derrick Sinclair also scored.
Carver, Fredborg, Brett Wur and Dayne Peter replied for Selkirk.
Peguis was 2-for-10 with the man advantage while Selkirk was 0-7. The shots were even at 28-28.
The Fishermen are back in action tomorrow night when they host the defending-league champions St. Malo Warriors at the Selkirk Rec Complex.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
